24 hours on the Suffolk coast

Are you visiting The Ship at Dunwich for a night and wondering what to do with your time while at the Suffolk coast? We have shared what we think is the best way to spend your 24 hours on the Suffolk coast.

Day one
Arrive at the beautiful Suffolk coast, check in to The Ship at Dunwich, where you will be shown to your cosy room for the night. Once you are all settled into your room, take a look around our charming inn and make yourself at home.

The Ship at Dunwich is the perfect base for exploring this stunning coastline; beaches, heathland, forests and charming local towns. Why not start by discovering the history of Dunwich before heading out to explore it for yourself? Dunwich Museum , which can be found just two doors down from us, it offers the perfect history experience. You will be able to discover the story of a city lost to the sea. A detailed model shows you what Dunwich was like at the height of its powers in the 13th Century, and the many exhibits cover Roman, Saxon, Medieval, Elizabethan, Jacobean Georgian and Victorian periods.

Now that you know all about the history of Dunwich, it’s time to go and see what the area looks like today. We would recommend starting at Dunwich Heath. Dunwich Heath is a nature reserve owned by the National Trust. It is teeming with wildlife, such as the Dartford warbler, nightjar, woodlark, ant-lion, adders and much more. This heath is full of unspoilt and exceptional beauty; you can enjoy wonderful moorland and forest walks with coastal views here. You are bound to have worked up an appetite by now, so why not head back to The Ship at Dunwich for a delicious, home-cooked meal. There is plenty to choose from on our menu; from Blythburgh free range baked ham and local free range eggs, The Ship’s classic fish & chips, or chargrilled halloumi through to traditional English puddings like sticky toffee pudding or Alburgh Norfolk made ice cream. Choose to eat in the bar, the conservatory, our huge beer garden or the dining room.

Why not finish your meal off with a few drinks in our bar? Here at The Ship at Dunwich, you will always find a selection of real beers, ales and ciders, including Adnams, Green Jack, Woodforde’s or Guinness and a range of guest ales from our favourite local breweries. We also have an excellent choice of wines and a range of soft drinks and tea and coffee.

Take an evening stroll along the beautiful Dunwich beach or around the historic village. Dunwich beach is a wide-open shingle beach, the perfect place to unwind. Afterwards, return to The Ship at Dunwich to enjoy a comfortable and cosy sleep brought on by the fresh sea air.

Get your day off to a wonderful start with a traditional home-cooked breakfast. It will set you up nicely for a day of exploring the surrounding Suffolk countryside and coast. 

Take a trip to RSPB Minsmere, set only a few miles from us here at The Ship at Dunwich. Minsmere is rated as one of the top bird sanctuaries in Europe and is the RSPB’s flagship European nature reserve. Minsmere supports an enormous range of bird species, it is particularly famous for its: avocets, bitterns and marsh harriers, and you might catch sight of its otters as well. Look out for red deer and a variety of woodland and heathland wildlife as you head over to Minsmere. There’s a choice of countryside walks offering fantastic scenery and wildlife, there is also many events and activities to take part in such as the Wild Zone which is the perfect place for families to explore and discover nature as they climb through sand martin tunnels or build a den. There is also guided walks, bird box building workshops and 4x4 safaris along with much more.

Nip back to The Ship at Dunwich to check out, and enjoy a coffee before heading out to explore the other areas surrounding the stunning Suffolk Coast.

Westleton village is just a short drive for The Ship at Dunwich. Westleton is an idyllic village set on the famous Suffolk Heritage Coast. Why not pop into our sister inn, The Westleton Crown, for a spot of lunch from their 2 AA rosette menu in their cosy parlour or stylish Garden Room? If you visit on a warmer day, you can enjoy al fresco dining in their charming terraced garden.

For the next part, head over to Southwold, the quintessentially English seaside town, with its historic pier, it is a must visit. Southwold is a seaside treasure with its famous beach huts, family-friendly beach, iconic lighthouse, quirky cinema and busy harbour. It also has many interesting and individual shops, and a charm that draws in visitors to return year after year. You can even take a boat trip on the Coastal Voyage.

Your 24 hours is now up and there is still so much more to see and do! So, what better excuse to return to the Suffolk Coast, but for now it’s time to head back home and leave the wonderful Suffolk Coast behind, until next time.
